GreenBar Collective organic spirits offsets drinkers' carbon footprints

06/05/2011

LOS ANGELES, June 6, 2011--GreenBar Collective, a Los Angeles-based organic spirits maker, today released the largest alcohol industry study on the environmental impact of producing and delivering a bottle of spirits to the public. The results, which covers CRUSOE rum, FRUITLAB liqueur, IX tequila, TRU gin and TRU vodka, show that one bottle of the companys spirits has a carbon footprint of 1.6-4 kg of CO2 equivalents, lower in most cases than wine.

GreenBar achieved these results by drastically altering its products three years ago to connect simple consumer choices to a positive impact on both the palate and the environment. It switched from conventional to organic spirits, from heavier to lighter bottles, from labels printed on virgin paper with petroleum-based inks and laminated in plastic to ones printed on100% recycled stock with soy inks and not laminated, and from PVC tamper-evident capsules to recycled paper strips. It also began planting one tree for each bottle sold.

Combined with the companys commitment to plant one tree per bottle soldwith each tree that GreenBar helps plant absorbing 790 kg of CO2 equivalentsthe net impact of one bottle of CRUSOE, FRUITLAB, IX or TRU is so radically carbon negative that drinking a typical cocktail with any GreenBar organic spirits will more than offsets an Americans carbon footprint for a day.

As organic cocktails gain a foothold in American bars and homes, cocktail lovers can now choose not only to drink better, but to drink to a better world, said Melkon Khosrovian, co-founder and spiritsmaker at GreenBar Collective. With clear, transparent choices, small actions can make a big impact.

To date, GreenBar Collective has helped plant more than 100,000 trees in the American rain forest, which will help remove the carbon footprint of more than 1.5 million Americans for a day over the trees lifespan.

The studies, which were conducted by independent third-party consultants Four Elements Consulting, LLC and Environmental Services, Inc., are available on the companys web site, greenbar.biz, under the Sustainability tab.
